The USAID crisis is causing serious trouble for humanitarian groups that depend on its funding. Edesia, a Rhode Island-based company producing 'Plumpy'Nut' peanut paste for severely malnourished children, recently laid off 10% of its staff and halted production for over two weeks due to financial strain. Similarly, Georgia’s MANA Nutrition, which makes therapeutic peanut-based food, is surviving on a Bank of America credit line. Both companies, along with many other organizations, haven't received payments from USAID since late 2024. While a judge ordered USAID to pay outstanding contracts by mid-February, processing has been slow, with over 6,000 payments still pending by late March. The crisis stems from the Trump administration’s abrupt efforts to dismantle USAID, freezing aid, slashing staff, and canceling contracts. Even after some were reinstated, payments have been sporadic. The agency is set to shut down by July, worsening the impact. Aid groups warn that thousands of lives are at stake. MANA’s CEO, Mark Moore, says they are scrambling to find alternative distribution partners outside USAID. Meanwhile, nearly 19,000 U.S. jobs and 166,000 global jobs have been lost. While the State Department claims USAID has released over $250 million in payments, humanitarian groups say it’s far from enough. 'We may have to shut down simply because we can’t pay salaries or rent,' one official told CNN. Beyond funding, the damage to trust is severe. With aid efforts stalled, communities suffering from tuberculosis, HIV, and malnutrition are left vulnerable. Experts warn that even if payments resume, the long-term damage is irreversible. #HumanitarianCrisis #GlobalAid #USAIDShutdown
