The Kouchi Ancient Temple in Chaozhou is located in Daohou Alley, south section of Xiping Road, Xiangqiao District, Chaozhou City. Originally named Jisheng Nunnery and also known as Dayin Nunnery, it was founded in the Tang Dynasty and has a long history. The name "Kouchi" originated in the 14th year of Yuanhe in the Tang Dynasty. When Han Yu was demoted to be the governor of Chaozhou and first met Zen Master Dadian, he was displeased because of the exposed big teeth of the Zen Master. Zen Master Dadian had a感应 and pulled out two front teeth and sent them to Han Yu. Han Yu was extremely guilty and wrote down "Kouchi Nunnery" with his brush. Later, it evolved into "Kouchi Ancient Temple". The ancient temple faces south and is divided into three entrances. The first entrance is the Diamond Hall, where the white jade holy statue of Cundi Bodhisattva and others are enshrined. The second entrance is the Mahavira Hall, which is restored according to the style of the Tang Dynasty. The roof is of Xieshan style, solemn and simple, and Sakyamuni is enshrined in the center. The third entrance is the Sutra Depository, which is divided into three floors, with upturned glazed tiles and copper bells hanging from the eaves. There is also a huge bronze bell weighing a thousand catties cast in the Bingwu year of the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty and an ancient sweet spring well of the Tang Dynasty in the temple. The temple is magnificent in scale and is a rare imitation of Tang architecture. It is a treasure of Buddhism in Guangdong. It is also the holy place where Han Yu and Dadian met, witnessing the cultural exchange between Confucianism and Buddhism. At the same time, it is also the headquarters of the Nanchang Uprising army. It has important historical significance. In 1980, it was listed as a key unit for cultural relic protection in Chaozhou City. In September 2000, it was awarded the title of "Buddhist Civilized Temple" by the provincial Buddhist Association. The plaques and couplets of many famous people's calligraphy add a profound cultural connotation to the ancient temple.
