There are waters that look calm… and depths that are anything but. “Beneath the Still Surface” is a shamanic reflection on the emotions we hide — not only from others, but from ourselves. In many traditions, the shaman watches what others cannot see. Not the mask. Not the words. But the current beneath. This song tells the story of calm that isn’t peace, of silence that isn’t healing, and of what happens when the unseen is ignored for too long. Still lakes can hold quiet danger. Unspoken wounds can shape entire lives. Sometimes the deepest threat is not outside of us… It is what we refuse to face within. 🌊 Sit with the water. 🌑 Look beneath the surface. 🔥 And listen before it rises. LYRIC: [Verse 1] You came with water in your eyes, Soft-spoken truths and careful lies. Your voice was steady, your shoulders light, But something in you held too tight. The fire was warm, the tribe was near, Yet silence carried more than fear. You smiled as if the lake were clear… But I have watched still waters for years. [Pre-Chorus] Calm is not the same as peace. Stillness does not mean release. [Chorus 1 – denial] Beneath the surface, the water lies calm, But in the deep, sorrow tightens its palm. What you see may appear at rest, But you don’t feel the weight in my chest. [Verse 2 – the parable] There is a lake where hunters kneel, Its mirrored sky too smooth to feel. No ripple breaks its glassy skin, Yet something waits awake within. The one who drinks without a pause May never see the hidden jaws. Still water does not always heal — It hides what no one wants to feel. [Pre-Chorus] What you refuse to face inside Will learn to turn against the tide. [Chorus 2 – fracture] Beneath the surface, the water lies still, But in the deep, something bends my will. What I called peace was fear in disguise, A quiet storm behind my eyes. [Solo – low drum pulse, distant flute, tension rising] [Bridge – confrontation] Do not mistake control for grace. Do not wear calm as your only face. A wound unspoken feeds its own Until it claims what you call home. You are not broken. But what you bury grows. [Verse 3 – revelation] I held the mask, I played it strong, I said, “I’m fine,” for far too long. The lake was mine, the silence too — The depth I feared was always true. I feared the deep, I feared the tide, So I built walls and called it pride. But water locked will turn to sea… And I became the cage in me. [Final Chorus] Beneath the surface, I learned to hide, But in the deep, the truth survived. The calm I showed was never free… I was the cage inside of me. Beneath the surface, the water lies still, But in the deep, something has its will. You can deny what you conceal… But the deep will rise, and it will reveal. [EFinal] Face the water while it sleeps. Do not wait until it speaks. What you bury does not die — It learns to breathe beneath your lie. The lake is calm… until it’s not. And what you hide… is what you’ve got.
