It is an essential ecological function Over 80 percent of the world's flowering plants require pollen, to create seeds that grow into new plants… Pollinating insects, like bees and butterflies carry pollen between plants. "If all mankind were to disappear, the world would regenerate back to the rich state of equilibrium that existed ten thousand years ago. If insects were to vanish, the environment would collapse into chaos." Edward O. Wilson In fact, one third of our global food supply is pollinated by bees.Butterflies contribute to thriving ecosystems and can indicate the state of an ecosystem’s health as they are particularly sensitive to climate change. Scientists monitor butterflies as a method of watching for warning signs of the more widespread effects of climate change. We are yet to realise the fact that bees and butterflies don’t have their space as we took over majority of the land. Around the world, pollinators are declining due to factors that threaten all biodiversity. Loss of habitat is the principal reason, followed massive use of pesticides, pollution, and much more. What can be done? Use of manure can be re-established like in the past. Policymakers, can make informed decisions that consider the needs of pollinators. Consumers can choose products that have been produced in a pollinator-friendly manner. Educators can emphasise the importance of pollinators, teach about their life experiences and instil an appreciation for the essential role played by pollinators in living systems. Let us show our future generations the chapters of understanding and loving the space and life around us.
