He is none other than the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. His Consort Komalavalli is called as Padi Thaanda Pathini here. The 2000 year old Temple has been built between River Cauvery and River Arasalaru. The 12 storeyed 147 feet high Temple was built by the Nayak Kings in the 15th Century. Later the Cholas, Pallavas and Vijayanagara Kings had their hand in futher improving the Temple. The Main Rajagopuram is 11 Tiered. This is the largest Vishnu Temple in Kumbakonam and the only Temple which has the Tallest Temple Tower. The Vimanam is called as Vaitheega Vimanam and the sacred Temple Tank is known as Hema Pushkarani or Potramarai Kulam. The Temple Tank Potramarai Kulam is located opposite to the Western Entrance of the Temple. The Temple is unique since it does not have a Sorgavaasal, this is because God is believed to have come directly from the Vaikuntam. Usually the Deity would be seen with a Conch and Discus but here instead of these two He holds a Sarangam or Bow in His hand and hence the name Sarangapani. Lord Sarangapani is seen in a Reclining or Pallikonda Posture as if He is going to get up. The Glory of Lord Sarangapani is well sung by all the Alwars and Sri Andal too. The Temple has twin Chariots and is considered to be the largest in Tamil Nadu. There is a Shrine for Lord Santhanakrishnan just before the Sanctum. Any Devotees or Tourists visiting the Temple Town of Kumbakonam would never miss this Temple.
