CINCINNATI (WKRC) - An advisory panel to the Food and Drug Administration is taking a closer look at a new tobacco technology. The “IQOS” is an electronic device that heats tobacco instead of burning it. “Philip Morris” makes the device and according to promotional information on their website, it releases a good tobacco taste with reduced harmful chemicals compared to cigarette smoke. But an advisory panel to the FDA has just announced Phillip Morris can't make the claim, the claim that reducing chemicals in that manner will lead to fewer health problems. The FDA doesn't have to take the recommendations from its advisory panel, but it usually does. Local 12 did ask Philip Morris for a response to this decision and were told in a statement that the company is encouraged by the "recognition of risk reduction potential.” Here is the statement from Phillip Morris in full: Philip Morris International appreciates the open, positive dialogue and the serious consideration the Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee (TPSAC) has shown during the last two days in discussing the complex science presented in our Modified-Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) application. We are encouraged by the recognition of the risk reduction potential of IQOS that clearly emerged from the statements of the Committee members. We are confident in our ability to address the valid questions raised by the Committee with the FDA as the review process for our application continues. There is more to be learned about the long-term effects of all electronic smoking devices and whether or not they lead to lower rates of cancer or other complications.
