President Trump has no shortage of issues to touch on during his State of the Union address to Congress on Feb. 24, but Ross Eisenberg hopes he can find a bit of time to talk plastics. President of America’s Plastic Makers and an advocate for the plastics industry within the American Chemistry Council, Eisenberg reminds us of the tremendous clout the sector has within the US economy. It supports over a trillion dollars in economic output and more than five million jobs domestically, he notes. Accordingly, he cites three policy priorities that are worthy of the President’s attention: Passage of the Recycling Innovation Act, which would define advanced recycling as manufacturing; Continued engagement in the Global Plastics Treaty negotiation, which is very much alive, according to Eisenberg, and has broad support in the industry if the focus remains on preventing pollution and not a reduction in production; The Plastic Health Research Act, a bipartisan bill that would establish sound science-based research into the effects of microplastics on human health. In this interview with PlasticsToday Editor Norbert Sparrow, Eisenberg fleshes out these policy proposals, and why they deserve President Trump’s attention.
