K1 Express Gondola Poma of America - MGD8 - 1997 Slope Length: 6453 ft Vertical Footage: 1642 ft Design Capacity: 2800 riders/hr Design Rope Speed: 1000 fpm VTF/H: 4.598e6 Killington’s K1 Gondola was the last investment made in the ski area under American Skiing Company Ownership. K1 was built during the 1997 construction season and replaced the Killington Peak Double, a 1975 Hall, which itself replaced the 1960 Poma/Carlevaro-Savio Killington Chairlift. K1 is also the second gondola to access the summit of Killington Peak (the famous 1969 Carlevaro-Savio Killington East Gondola was the first), however from 1994 to 1997 Killington Peak was only accessible via the Killington Peak Double. K1 is a Poma Competition Gondola system, featuring the shorter variant of Poma’s Competition gondola terminals (fixed drive that the top, tensioned return at the bottom) designed for 1000 fpm. The grips are Poma’s Double-TB-41 detachable grips. The cabins were originally CWA Omega cabins, each of which had its own unique exterior artwork. Those cabins were replaced with Sigma Diamond 8 passenger cabins in 2018. It is worth noting that the new cabins, like the ones they replaced, are not level-walk-in cabins. The lifting frames are Poma’s Omega era frames, and the sheaves are Poma’s 450mm sheaves. Recorded on November 26, 2019
