The group seamlessly blends together a tapestry of folk, world, chamber, and jazz - honoring each members’ background with a mission to transcend and give “into the pleasure of being lost” (Vincent Senegal). They used Jazz à Vienne, a festival founded in 1981, as an opportunity to showcase their self-titled album, released in 2023 via NØ FØRMAT! Records. Steeped in the placid air of Kenny G's easy listening music, each instrument delivered the rhythms inventively, weaving and melding into each other. However, so much space was earnestly carved between the notes for melodies to ring out and resonate. Around 15:43, the group presents “Orient Express”, track 4 on the record. So far in the set, the group stays in a consonant, reflective, and cavernous dynamic – but with this song, the soprano saxophone starts to slip out of the modal template, daring to ramp things up. Taking a more dramatic turn, “Orient Express” follows iterations on the American blues scale. Through this, the philosophy behind Les Égarés demonstrates a stoic reverence to musical tradition while expressing curiosity to reinvent and reinvigorate.
