When Pat recovered from routine cataract surgery in her right eye and couldn’t read the biggest letters on the vision chart, she was referred to neuro-ophthalmologist Amanda Henderson at Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Medicine. An MRI revealed that a tumor was pressing on Pat’s optic nerve. Neurosurgeon Risheng Xu was brought into the case, and he determined that Pat had a #meningioma — a benign, slow-growing tumor — along the skull base region of her brain. Xu performed a long and challenging surgery to dissect the tumor away from the nerve and free it from the blood vessels, which ultimately restored Pat’s vision.
