Training Requirements: New umpires must complete a free "Introduction to Umpiring" course at USA Baseball (usabdevelops.com), download the PDF certificate, and email it to paaumps@gmail.com. Arbiter Setup: You will receive a welcome email from Arbiter Sports. You must log in, set a password, update your profile with your cell/email, and check the "Ready" box to receive game assignments (top left of the main page). Scheduling & Availability: Use the Arbiter website or mobile app to block out dates you are unavailable (games, school, etc.). If a day isn't blocked, I will assume you are available to work. Game Assignments: Games are scheduled 2 to 3 weeks in advance. You have 48 hours to Accept or Decline a notification. The "Work" Commitment: Once you accept a game, you are committed. If a team practice is scheduled later, you must honor the umpiring assignment over the practice. Field Mentorship: New umpires will be paired with a senior "partner" for coaching and will start in the field (rather than behind the plate) to get comfortable. Game Day Gear: Wear your provided PAA Umpire t-shirt and dark shorts/pants (no jeans). Equipment is located in the black bin with the yellow lid in the corner of the Stoddard, Fred Allen, or Pool Field sheds. Pre-Game Rituals: Arrive 20–30 minutes early. Meet the coaches 5 minutes before start time to cover ground rules, receive two balls, and get paid ($25 for base, $35 for plate). Game Management: Document the start time (no new inning after 1 hour 45 minutes). Use your phone only for timekeeping. Between innings, huddle with your partner to reflect on calls and positioning. Interaction with Coaches: Be LOUD and VISIBLE with calls. If you make a mistake, acknowledge it briefly in between innings or upon conclusion of the game and move on. Parents are encouraged to let the umpires handle coach interactions. Emergency Contact: For last-minute cancellations, sickness, you must call or text Coach Abe immediately to avoid game cancellations. Next Steps: Read pages 36 to 86 of the Official Babe Ruth Rule Book before the next meeting on February 26 at 7 pm.
