Exploring Europe is a delight for travelers, with its historic cities, vibrant cultures, and modern conveniences. One such convenience is the widespread acceptance of credit cards and Apple Pay in the subway systems of many European countries. Gone are the days of fumbling with coins or purchasing tickets; now, all you have to do is tap your credit card or use Apple Pay at the turnstiles, and you’re good to go. On our visit to Keukenhof, the world-renowned flower garden in the Netherlands, we experienced this modern ease firsthand. With a day ticket in hand, our journey began at Amsterdam’s Central Station, where we hopped on the subway to Europaplien Station, reminiscent of London’s tube system. The train ride was smooth and efficient, leading us to the meeting point at the Europaplien Bus Ticketing Counter. Keukenhof, located in South Holland, just south of Haarlem and southwest of Amsterdam, is nestled in the Dune and Bulb Region. Though the grounds are open year-round for private events and festivals, the general public can only visit during the spectacular eight-week tulip display from mid-March to mid-May. The peak bloom, influenced by the season’s weather, usually occurs around mid-April. Also known as the Garden of Europe, Keukenhof spans 32 hectares (79 acres) and boasts an annual planting of approximately 7 million flower bulbs. While tulips are the star attraction, the gardens also feature a stunning variety of hyacinths, daffodils, lilies, roses, carnations, and irises. Arriving at Keukenhof Upon arrival, the first order of business was coffee at the main entrance to fuel our excitement. Meanwhile, I visited the information counter to grab a brochure detailing the park’s layout and attractions. Having prepaid for the entrance and bus ride, we simply scanned our QR tickets at the gate and stepped into the floral wonderland. Exploring the Gardens Inside, my mum was immediately drawn to a charming musical organ, a relic from a bygone era that predates DVDs, CDs, and MP3s. Her delight was evident as she admired the intricate mechanics of this antique music box. Next, we discovered the iconic wooden shoes, perfect for photos with the vibrant flower garden backdrop—a quintessential Amsterdam experience that my mum adored. One of the highlights was the opportunity to walk across the lake on stepping stones, offering a unique vantage point of the garden. Standing in the middle of the lake, we enjoyed a different perspective of the surrounding beauty. Flower Shows and Pavilions Keukenhof is home to several impressive pavilions, each showcasing a diverse array of floral displays. The Willem-Alexander Pavilion hosts indoor flower shows with contributions from over 500 growers, presenting their finest blooms. Each flower is meticulously labeled, providing an educational experience for visitors. At the Orange Nassau Pavilion, daily flower arranging demonstrations reveal the artistry behind simple bouquets and elaborate floral creations. This pavilion’s displays change weekly, ensuring a fresh experience for repeat visitors. The Beatrix Pavilion is a haven for orchid and anthurium enthusiasts. Over 40 Dutch orchid growers showcase hundreds of cultivars, creating what might be the most beautiful orchid display in Europe. The pavilion also features Instagram-worthy spots perfect for capturing the vibrant colors and intricate designs of the flowers. Iconic Windmill and Whisper Boat Ride One of the most photographed landmarks in Keukenhof is the charming windmill, set against fields of colorful tulips. This picturesque scene is a favorite among visitors. Behind the windmill, expansive flower fields stretch out, offering a breathtaking backdrop for photos. For those looking to explore further, a Whisper Boat ride along the river provides a 45-minute audio tour of the flower bulb region, offering insights into its history and cultivation. Keukenhof is more than just a garden; it’s a celebration of nature’s beauty and human creativity. From the vibrant flower displays to the charming pavilions and picturesque windmill, every corner of the park offers something unique and enchanting. Whether you’re a horticulture enthusiast or simply looking to enjoy a day surrounded by nature’s splendor, Keukenhof is a must-visit destination in the heart of the Netherlands.
