NOTE: This version is INTENDED as a 'musically-by-the-bar perfect' cutdown of the MUSIC of Shorty Rogers in Friz Freleng's "Three Little Bops" cartoon featuring the MUSIC of Shorty Rogers, and is NOT a presentation of the entire 8-minute cartoon, as now the Three Little Pigs have returned for a Comeback Tour! UPDATE: The bassist is another "Red". Not Red Mitchell, but Red Callender. The published research source was incorrect - and my apologies for the wrong end credit - but I cannot re-upload unfortunately... And for our younger viewers, you now understand who's vocal impression the piano pig mimics - and what he means by it. In the mid-1950s, Liberace had a very popular filmed TV show where he schmoozed to the camera and was accompanied by his older brother, George Liberace, who was his musical conductor, orchestra leader, and violinist (it's on YouTube). Released in 1957, this Warner Bros. Cartoon has always been a classic, especially for jazz lovers - as this cartoon stands out from all the rest by being the only cartoon scored by a musical group that was NOT the Warner Brothers Studio Orchestra OR John Seely stock music as well as being one of the few cartoons that does NOT have Mel Blanc anywhere near it! Satirist, recording and voice artist and radio comedian (and later advertising maven) Stan Freberg (also known as the voices of one of the Goofy Gophers - as well as Pete Puma) voices the poetic narration as well as voicing all of the 3 Little Pigs! [as the opening audio proves!]. The animation is not particularly notable - it is the usual Friz Freleng 'look and feel' (i.e. "Show Biz Bugs"), however the music track is where it's at in this cartoon. Carl Stalling and Milt Franklyn took a breather on this score, as Freleng was a jazz aficionado - and took a liking to the new music scene in L.A. for jazz. It was called "West Coast Jazz", or "Cool Bop" - and the musicians in this cartoon were all originators of the genre, particularly Shorty. Even though I made the decision to finalize the credits (which i admit MAY be inaccurate - there is great speculation as to exactly WHO are the session musicians that were part of Shorty's group, known collectively as "Shorty Rogers and His Giants" - with mainstays Pete Jolly on piano and Jimmy Giuffre on baritone sax (he usually played a tenor). The bass player is said to be Red Mitchell, as per a Stan Freberg recollection, although during this period bassists Ralph Pena and Curtis Counce were regulars, as well as another 'Red', Red Callender. The drummer I've speculated, was more likely session-master Stan Levey, who was known as a 'heavy-hitter' - and this drummer sure slams the crap out of the snare, as Shelly seemed to be more 'delicate' and 'technical', as heard on the end credits track which indeed is Shelly, and is quite different stylistically from the cartoon - but these top-shelf session musicians were like musical chameleons. Either way, the one thing many people get tired of is the 'story narration', even though it is hip and jive-y. So, what you see here is all the music breaks without narration - with ALOT of editing and edit-coverups by using cymbal hits. The source of the audio is the cartoon audio from the DVD - which was a noisy and flat MONO. The entire cartoon was re-edited to the new edited music track, which I've edited in complete 12-bar sections. NOW - you can REALLY get into the JAZZIEST, SWINGY-EST modern theatrical cartoon - with no narration breaks or storyline - just the genius of Shorty Rogers and his top session musicians.
