Cigar Review Brick House by JC Newman

Cigar Review – Brick House When Smoked: March, 2025 Obtained from: Local cigar retailer Size: Toro (6 inches x 52) Approximate cost: US$8.00 See ratings below Brick House is made by J.C. Newman cigars, sort of their “working man’s cigar” at a reasonable price. J.C. Newman is best known for Diamond Crown and other pricey sticks, with the Brick House and Perla Del Mar (PDM) being their mid-priced brands. Brick House was originally a Cuban cigar, developed in the 1930s by Julius Caesar Newman, the parriarch of the family. It was meant to be a good cigar that was affordable during bad economic times – unfortunately the Great Depression caught up with cigar sales and Brick House was short-lived in its initial Cuban version. Fast forward to 2009 – also bad economic times – and J.C. Newman Cigars (now in Tampa, Florida) re-released the Brick House, again as an affordable cigar for the working man. An early vitola for the Brick House was the “Mighty Mighty,” a 6” x 60 gauge stick that (although common today) was a novelty in 2009. That and the low price brought a lot of attention for Brick House and got it off the ground. The Brick House natural (there is also a Maduro, which I don’t recommend, and a Connecticut which is pretty good) is a nice-looking cigar. It features a proprietary habano-style wrapper that is a beautiful caramel shade and smooth to the touch. I’m not big on cold draws and smelling unlit cigars, but this one caught my eye (or nose, as it were) and I was impressed by it before lighting. My biggest complaint about this stick was smoke production early on – it took about 1/4 to get to adequate smoke production. It also exhibited some cracking but the smoking experience did not suffer until the very end, I may have been able to get another ½” out of it without the cracking. But all in all, not a deal breaker in terms of enjoyment. Overall this is a good cigar – not a great one. If you’re familiar with Charter Oak, I liken it to that – a very good value in today’s marketplace, but it won’t blow you away. I rate it a 7.5/10. If you’ve never had a Brick House, I’d pick one up in the Toro or Churchill size (stay away from the Mighty Mighty).
