A second order circuit like the one investigated here contains capacitance as well as inductance while the unavoidable circuit resistance provides damping. S1 and S2 are electronic switches, which repeatedly open and close at 100Hz. When switch S1 is closed S2 is open and vice-versa. In this manner the natural response of the LCR circuit consisting of the rightmost loop in the figure can be measured on the oscilloscope. N is a circuit to control the switching action. Set up the variable resistor in such a manner that the voltage response of the capacitor is under-damped. From the voltage response waveform, determine the poles of the system and plot them on the complex plane. Repeat this for the critically and over-damped cases.
