I learn about squat toilets in China. Oh boy. So, I'm talking with Eric, who's basically pit boss at GZTV, and we're discussing what aspects of culture I find really shocking in China... and of course, the issue of toilets comes up. We're laughing about this some, but I don't actually expect to be taping anything about the Westerner's experience with squat toilets. Yuck. Silly me. :) A month or so later, I come in in the morning and get the day's assignment... and there it is: we're doing toilets on Culture Shock. I didn't have a hand in the script, and some parts of the writing are terrible (what on earth is that about the 'American expert' at the beginning?) but I thought Connie actually did a good job keeping this episode both lighthearted while exploring the issue in less-than-gruesome detail. We had a lot of fun with the stuff from 4:30 on. The phone stuff and the smoking stuff are all completely true--we're not exaggerating. Sadly, there was a 'conversations at the urinal' scene--another frequent occurrence in Chinese men's rooms--that was cut. Kevin pulls up to the urinal right next to mine, engages in rapid conversation, then looks over to check my size. The whole bit was hilarious, but didn't make it past the censors. Too bad, as, from personal experience, it's certainly something that happens in Chinese men's rooms. Like many foreigners living in China, I had the location of every decent restroom in downtown Guangzhou memorized. It can be really difficult to find washrooms in public areas in China via signage, so you get very accustomed to asking people where the washroom is. Finding it can be an adventure in itself. The best public washroom I was ever in in China was at the World Trade building in Shanghai. Super high-tech, super clean, super hygienic. The worst would be a tie between: 1) The washroom in the sports stadium where I went to play soccer, my first night in China. The smell was so overpowering it LITERALLY almost knocked me out. Ever break an ammonia snap right under your nose? Imagine that, but more powerful and with a washroomy smell. 2) The rows of unwalled (completely open!) squat toilets at a gas station on a tour of Guangdong province. I walked in, thought about how badly I needed to go, and then decided I could hold it in the rest of the year if I had to. Now THAT experience was real culture shock.
