Discover the incredible history of the PBY Catalina patrol bombers in The Story of the Black Cats. In the vast, dark expanse of the Pacific War, a different kind of hunter prowled the night skies. They were not sleek fighters, but lumbering long-range flying boats with a deadly purpose. Painted black for camouflage, the Black Cats flew daring low-level missions under the cover of darkness. They became the scourge of Japanese shipping, disrupting vital supply lines with torpedoes and bombs. By day, these same aircraft transformed into angels of mercy. Known as Dumboes, they flew perilous air-sea rescue missions, saving countless downed airmen from the sea. General Information: The PBY Catalina, built by the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation, was an all-metal flying boat. It was the first of the Navy seaplanes not to be designed with wires, fabric, and glue. The first production PBY-1 was accepted in 1936, and more than thirty-three hundred PBYs would eventually be produced. Its maximum range nearly reached four thousand miles, vastly exceeding other Navy planes at the time. During the war, the PBY was highly versatile, hunting submarines in the Atlantic and performing nighttime raids in the Pacific. A standard crew included eight members: a bombardier, pilot, co-pilot, navigator, radio operator, flight engineer, and two waist gunners. The PBY-5A model was an amphibian featuring a retractable undercarriage, making it capable on land or sea. Before the Pearl Harbor attack, a PBY patrol flying boat spotted a Japanese submarine less than two miles off the entrance to the harbor. Acting on standing orders, the pilot dropped a depth charge on the intruder. Later in the war, the Black Cat squadrons were instrumental in severing Japanese supply lines, notably the Tokyo Express during the Guadalcanal campaign. With an array of armaments and the cover of night, these unarmored, slow-flying boats achieved monumental success against enemy fleets. ➤ Watch more aircraft, heroes, and their stories and missions: / @dronescapes To support our work and channel, join @ / @dronescapes Thank you! 🙏🎖️ ➤ More aircraft and history videos: / @dronescapes ➤ Join the channel: / @dronescapes ➤ THREADS: https://www.threads.net/@dronescapesv... ➤ FB: / dronescapesvideos ➤ Reddit: / atellani ➤ IG: / dronescapesvideos ➤ BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/dronescapes.... ➤ Tumblr: https://www.tumblr.com/blog/dronescap... ➤ X/Twitter: https://dronescapes.video/2p89vedj VIDEO SERIES: 🎥U.S. AIRCRAFT VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/US 🎥AVIATION VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/aviation 🎥GERMAN AIRCRAFT VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/WWIIGermany 🎥BRITISH AIRCRAFT VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/British 🎥ERIC BROWN VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/EricBrown 🎥B-29 VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/B29 🎥VIETNAM AND KOREA: https://dronescapes.video/Vietnam 🎥TURBOJET VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/Turbojet 🎥SUPERSONIC VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/fastest 🎥EXTREME AIRCRAFT VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/Extreme 🎥STRANGE PLANES VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/Extreme 🎥COLD WAR ERA VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/ColdWar 🎥 WW2 VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/WW2 #BlackCats #PBYCatalina #WWII
