In this video, the creator of the Ketamine Academy and Ketamine Clinic Founder, Jason A. Duprat MBA, MSA, BSN, BS, CRNA, LCDR (USNR) discusses the new FDA approved esketamine nasal spray, otherwise known as Spravato. You will want to watch the video for the full story, but in short, the Spravato nasal spray was a nearly failed attempt by Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson) to capitalize the outstanding success of intravenous ketamine therapy for treatment-resistant depression. Janssen attempted to create a version of ketamine (esketamine) that in theory, would have the same benefits but fewer side effects as the real ketamine. Ultimately the effectiveness of esketamine turned out to be much less than the normal IV ketamine which contains both enantiomers. In layman's terms, generic intravenous ketamine therapy uses the entire ketamine molecule which is far more effective than esketamine (half of the ketamine molecule). For providers interested in offering Spravato, this video discusses the pharmacology, the studies, and how to become a certified healthcare center. It also discusses insurance reimbursement and other important issues related to the nasal esketamine (Spravato)
