Composer: Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) Piece: The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya (1905) Prelude (Hymn to the Wilderness) 0:00:00 - The opera begins with an orchestral depiction of the scenery of forest wilderness. Act I (Kerzhenskii Woods) 2:42 - The curtain rises on the wild forests, home to Fevronia, a daughter of nature. 8:39 - She meets Prince Vsevolod, who has been hunting and lost his way. He falls for her beauty and spiritual integrity. 12:51 - They sing a love duet, in which he places a ring on her finger. 29:06 - This is interrupted by the sound of the hunting party from afar. He bids her farewell and goes to find them. 32:32 - Fevroniya then learns from the huntsman Poyarok that she has become betrothed to the Prince of Kitezh. Act II (Little Kitezh on the Volga) 33:33 - Holiday festivities are going on in the market square. 35:47 - An old psaltery-player sings a solemn song. 41:03 - The rich townsfolk persuade Grishka Kuterma (the local drunkard) to mock Princess Fevronia. 46:46 - The wedding procession approaches to the sound of bells. 56:16 - Suddenly the merrymaking is interrupted as the town is surrounded by an army of invading Tatars. Fevronia is captured. Grishka agrees to betray Russia and lead the Tatars to the city of Greater Kitezh, while 1:01:46 - Fevronia prays that the city be rendered invisible. Act III Scene 1 (Great Kitezh) 1:03:07 - Hearing of the invasion, the people of Greater Kitezh gather in arms. 1:06:13 - The prince's huntsman Fyodor Poyarok, whom the Tatars have blinded, tells them of the atrocities committed at Little Kitezh. The people prepare for battle. 1:31:51 - A golden fog rises over the Lake and shrouds the city, hiding it from the enemy, as its church bells chime miraculously. 1:36:42 - A fierce symphonic interlude depicts the Battle of Kerzhenets. Act III Scene 2 (At the lake Svetlyi Iar) 1:40:59 - Grishka has led the Tatars to the edge of the lake. Unable to see the city, they tie him to a tree. Two of the Tatar leaders, Burundai and Bedyai, quarrel over Fevronia and Bedyai is slain. 1:51:09 - Fevronia mourns Vsevolod, who has fallen in battle. She takes pity on the tormented Grishka and frees him. 2:01:45 - The dawn shows that while the city remains invisible, its reflection can be seen in the water, and the bells ring out ever louder. 2:03:14 - The Tatars are stricken with fear by the sight and disperse. Act IV Scene 1 (Kerzhenskii Woods) 2:04:31 - Fevronia and Grishka, exhausted, struggle through the wilderness. 2:12:59 - Grishka is delirious, and after singing a song about the devil, he runs off screaming. 2:16:47 - Fevronia is lulled to sleep and in her dream the scene is transformed, with fantastic blossoming flowers and fairy songbirds. 2:23:21 - The mythical bird of sorrow, Alkonost, appears to tell her she must die. 2:27:33 - She welcomes death, and her prince appears to lead her to Kitezh. A second bird, Sirin, promises immortality. 2:38:25 - A magical Symphonic Interlude depicts the passage to the Invisible City. Act IV Scene 2 (The Invisible City) 2:41:29 - The scene is transformed into the legendary city of Kitezh. Fevronia and Vsevolod, Prince Yuri and Fyodor Poyarok all reappear. 2:55:21 - Fevronia sends a message of hope to Grishka, telling him that one day he too will find the way to the Invisible City. 3:01:38 - Vsevolod leads his bride to the altar as a final Hymn of Joy ends the opera.
