Sony Fx1000 HD Demo

Just got the camera, and I shot some test fotage at a local park. I relied primarily on manual focus, trying out the expanded focus feature and the peaking focus assist for the first time. Some lessons learned-in wide shots, I should keep what is right up close in sharp focus, and let the background go soft. I also found the 30P mode to be very pleasing, and 24P-not so much. I used a shutter speed of 180 for most of this video, and let the auto iris do all the work except for the sunset, where I switched to manual Iris. I set the WB with a WB card, and did not reset it as conditions changed, so I could test the intelligent WB shift on the camera. I had steadyshot engaged in standard, AE shift at -3, and the blacks were stretched, and knee point at middle.. The picture profile was a variation of their cinetone1, with color level +2, color phase +3, color depth +3, sharpness +2. The tape was a Sony Videographer Grade HDV/MiniDV. The workflow I liked so far has been to shoot in HDV, downconvert in camera to DV, import in Studio 11 as Full DV, output to DVD in Best quality, which is Mpeg-2 with Mpeg1- Layer 2 audio. It looks great, especially when played on an upconverting DVD player. I brought it in as Mpeg2 previously, for ease of editing and hard drive space, however upon export to DVD, it compressed the already compressed Mpeg2 video into Mpeg2 again, and yielded pixelated, worse than Standard definition results. Not liking the compression via mpeg 4. All part of the experiment in workflow, this part involving how to get great HD onto the net with the smallest file size. So I chose the MPEG4 due its smaller file size, and I knew in the back of my mind that I wouldn't like it, and I was right. If you are looking at a compression scheme of 1.6 GB vs 280MB, obviously you are going to lose a lot of detail, which I did. Lesson Learned. Here I experimented with a HD upload, and downgraded the 1440X1080 video to 1280X720. It seems to have softened it up a bit. I went with mpeg4 at the suggestion of youtube. I think I won't do that again. Also, I really like this camera.
