So this was INSANE. While I did have to work this day I did manage to find a window of opportunity to get out to film quite possibly one of the more crazy Albany storms I have seen in the last 2 years. The shear amount of rain and flash flooding that took place around where I was I haven't seen since about 2018 or 2019. It was insane just the rainfall rates that I was seeing and it sucks kind of that I had to work cause otherwise this could have been one of the best Albany storm chases in the last 2 years as I said. So I was a little pissed in a way that there was no storms before I had to be in for work and honestly I wasn't really thinking about storms much as the day progressed cause I didn't think much would form. NAM and HRRR weren't entirely doing much but the conditions were there in Albany for some good stuff to pop if it went off. It was just how it would organize and evolve was the question. Pretty much around 630pm I heard a big clap of thunder and immediately checked the radar and to my surprise saw a solid severe warned storm complex coming for my work area and most of the capital region of Albany. I immediately went outside to take a look to the SW to see what I could see. It definitely was looking fierce what was coming and the lightning it was packing was a lot and intense based off the thunder I was hearing. I really couldn't leave my work but at the same time while this complex was moving in I was surprised this wasn't tornado warned as a couple of the parts of the complex began to show hook echoes and rotation was decent for a time on them. They were also really close to the radar too so the beam was pretty damn low on them. The line did gust out and this was just bringing so much rain and wind to where I worked. We did have a co-worker that did have to leave up to Clifton Park but I advised not to travel in the conditions I was seeing and also there was a flash flood warning issued. I mean that was no surprise with the rainfall rates I was seeing outside and the flash flooding taking place. I decided to venture out to see if there was any flooding taking place nearby so if they wanted to leave they wouldn't be surprised or rather I could see if there was any flooding to worry about. There was some spot starting to gather a fair bit of water and my plan was to go down near Holy Names and turn back to my workplace but....well...that's where the problems arose. I pretty much got stuck at my favorite chase spot at Holy Names. I plowed through what was about 8 inches of water and that nearly swamped my Camry and I was not gonna chance going back through that and ruining my hybrid car. Hell even just the brief period of time I was trying to turn around in the parking lot the water filled to about a solid foot and from that point on it was a waiting game. The rain was coming down so heavy so I had no choice but to wait it out and also I took the chance to kind of hybrid storm chase too. So just continued to film the rain and tremendous lightning from this awesome storm complex as it pushed through Albany. The CG strikes this was producing were so legit. I know there was about 5 solid positive strikes I saw and there was many more I missed filming and also just earlier at my work too. The flooding in front of where I was at Holy Names did continue to worsen to the point there was about 2 1/2 feet of standing water at the entrance/exit of the school. I could not believe the 4 cars that were around me decided to push through that at nearly maximum depth. Not worried for drowning cause it was standing water and depth you could make out but damn....you could easily destroy your engine with plowing through that. I am amazed the PT Cruiser didn't get stuck honestly with how low it is in the front. Eventually the rain did stop but did flair up again but it did open up just enough that just past 8pm the storm drains did eat up enough water to make the passage across doable with under 6 inches of water and not worry me about swamping my car. Hell I only have had this car for only 5 months so....I don't plan to ruin it. ASAPed it back to work and that was that. Did see a tree limb down but there was a good bit of tree damage around Albany from this complex of storms. Overall, this I will take. While I wish I got a full chase in I will take this even though it was a work day. It did count as a chase day....kind of...I guess but man I got solid video. Would have been awesome if I had my S1 cause I could have just let that sit out in the rain and do it's thing but...I was not gonna bring that to work.
