This episode of Transmissions From Jonestown examines the history of the making of the gospel funk album, " He's Able". Music was often peoples first and last impression of Peoples Temple. From the moment you walked into a Temple service, the music created a certain atmosphere. The voices of the choir lifted the spirits of the congregants, electrifying the audience. In 1973 the Temple recorded the gospel funk album “He’s Able”. The altruistic message of equality expressed on the album, the optimism and high energy of the singers juxtaposes what we know will be their eventual fate in Jonestown. Yet in that moment in 1973 etched on vinyl, the Temple’s future is not yet set, and the dreamers still believed, and you can hear it. This is the story behind the making of “He’s Able”. He’s Able was recorded at the Producers Workshop on Hollywood Blvd. in Los Angeles. The album was produced by Jack Arnold Beam. Jack contributed several original songs for the Album such as Because of Him, Set Them Free, Will You, and Hold on Brother. Musicians who performed on the album include, the Peoples Temple’s choir, and youth choir led by Don Beck. Richard Tropp on cello. Rick Cordell on Trombone. Mike Wood on Sax, Danny Curtin, Lew Jones, and Danny Pietila on Drums. Loretta Cordell on the Hammond B3 organ. Deanna Wilkinson on piano. Jack Arnold Beam on Guitar and base. Bob Houston on base. Vocalists include Deanna Wilkinson, Joyce Beam, Norman Ijames, Jim Jones, Marceline Jones, Melvin Johnson, Shirley Smith, and Ruth Coleman. The Attention Span Recovery Project would like to thank our special guests for this episode Mike Wood, Jack Arnold Beam and Laura Johnston Kohl. Jack Beam kindly contributed three original songs for this episode. “Father Knows Best”, “Unnamed Piano Piece”, and “Inspirational Montage”.
