RD21748(vid). In 1972 I went on a three week tour of South Africa and Mozambique organised by Dave Thornhill of World Steam magazine. Steam in the United Kingdom had finish in 1968 having been run down over several years, but steam was still an everyday sight in many counties overseas with South Africa being one of the premier destinations. Despite being 3ft 6in gauge, the South African Railways had some enormous locomotives including 4-8-2, 4-8-4, and 2-8-4s, plus many classes of Beyer-Garratt up to 4-8-2 + 2-8-4s. And in some areas, there were also many miles of 2ft gauge lines with 2-8-2s and Beyer-Garratts up to 2-6-2 + 2-6-2s. We managed to fit in a quick visit to the MPD at nearby Germiston in the late afternoon on the day of our arrival, but the gricing started in earnest the next morning with a visit to Capital Park shed in Pretoria. What we saw there was wondrous to behold to a car load of steam starved Brits… Sunday, 20th August, 1972. Copyright © Ron Fisher 2021.
