The power-sharing debate in Karnataka is back in focus as MLAs seen as loyal to Deputy CM D. K. Shivakumar met in Bengaluru amid renewed speculation over leadership change. After the Congress’ 2023 victory, a tussle between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar was reportedly resolved through a compromise formula. While there were reports of a rotational arrangement, the party never officially confirmed it. As the halfway mark of the government’s term passed, lobbying efforts resurfaced, though both leaders publicly projected unity. Senior Congress leader Randeep Surjewala has previously stepped in to defuse tensions. Meanwhile, in Gujarat, two major legal debates are unfolding. The Gujarat government has proposed amendments to the Gujarat Registration of Marriages Act that may require couples to declare whether their parents have been informed of their marriage. Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi said the move aims to prevent coercion and exploitation, but critics argue it could infringe upon the autonomy and privacy of consenting adults. At the same time, the Gujarat High Court set aside a conviction in a 1996 matrimonial cruelty and abetment of suicide case. Justice Gita Gopi ruled that a single alleged incident of slapping did not amount to cruelty under Section 498A without evidence of sustained harassment.
