I spent way too long reading Henry Mayhew's interviews with Victorian London's worst-off workers and honestly some of this stuff is hard to believe. There were people who collected dog poop for a living because tanneries needed it to make leather. Kids as young as six wading barefoot through Thames sewage for pennies. Women standing in freezing bogs letting leeches drink their blood so doctors could practice medicine that didn't work. And then there's phossy jaw, which I really wish I could unlearn. The Industrial Revolution built the modern world but the people at the bottom of it paid for that in ways that are genuinely difficult to sit with.
