The piece "The Marne" retells the epic battle that took place north of the Marne River on September 5, 1914. The allies, who had been in retreat for two weeks prior to this battle, received French reinforcements from Paris. These reinforcements flanked the advancing German army while the French armies, formerly in retreat, turned to fight against their enemy. The Germans were then divided to combat the allied reinforcements as well as the remainder of the French forces. This created a gap in their lines, which the British Expeditionary Force took advantage of. The German army saw the danger and retreated to the Aisne River, entrenching themselves on the far side.
