For more than two millennia, the imperial courts of China preserved a system that official histories often softened or obscured. Young men were removed from their families, educated within guarded palace environments, and elevated as intimate attendants to emperors, aristocrats, and high-ranking officials. From the era of the Han Dynasty to the collapse of the Qing Dynasty, this institution influenced court politics, redirected imperial favor, and reshaped the destinies of those drawn into its orbit. Among the most well-documented cases is the relationship between Emperor Ai of Han and Dong Xian—a story that later gave rise to the enduring expression known as the “passion of the cut sleeve.” Their account stands not as legend, but as recorded history, preserved in early imperial texts. This video examines the primary sources that describe this system, the individuals whose lives were defined by it, and the recurring cycle of elevation and downfall that characterized court favoritism across successive dynasties. 📚 Historical Sources Ban Gu — Book of Han (Hanshu), 1st century AD — Official biography of Dong Xian and Emperor Ai Sima Qian — Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), 1st century BC — “Biographies of the Emperors’ Male Favorites” Bret Hinsch — Passions of the Cut Sleeve: The Male Homosexual Tradition in China (University of California Press, 1990) Cambridge History of China, Vol. 7 — James Geiss, “The Cheng-Te Reign” (on the Zhengde Emperor) ⚠️ This video is created for educational purposes.
