This beech tree was eaten away by the Meripilus giganteas fungus. That fungus will attack the larger roots, causing instability. Today we decided to fell this tree. It could not end up in the pond. Next to that, the shed nearby was a no go either, and the smaller oak trees needed to survive. So i opted a path trough some Abies grandis trees and some black locust trees. Both exotic species. It was unsure, after so many years with fungi living in this tree and eating away at it, how good and solid the inside of this beech would be. It was also a backleaner towards the pond... So I opted to use two tirfor 3,5 tonnes winches, and a mechanized wedge in the backcut. Allegedly that wedge can push 20 tonnes, according to Forstreich. The felling path would be right in between the two winches. To be on the safe side i kept the hinge slightly thicker than the 10 percent or so I usually aim for. Just to be on a safer side when the structural strength of the wood would be compromised by fungi. The saw I am using is a new husqvarna 592 with an 32 inch bar. I could not get trough this tree in one go, so I guess the tree is around 42 inch or so at 1.30 meters (4ft) high. To support the mechanical wedge, I also drive in some normal wedges. I also wanted to support the hinge with those, so i places them a bit more to the corners of the cut. The people helping me were friends of the landowner with not much experience in this kind of work, hence my gestures and words towards them. They were good helpers on this jobsite!
