Testing the Nikkor 20mm 1:1.8G ED with the Nikon D7100. Is it as good on a DX as FX? In this video I test the AF speed, close focus, 14 point sunburst, and made adjustment to AF fine tuning. I then did field testing for time lapse, photos, and panoramas to see if it's any good on the DX Nikon D7100. The Nikon 20mm f/1.8G has mixed reviews: some say it's Nikon's best wide angle in 20 years, and others say it's just mediocre and nothing special. Thus, I needed to see for myself if this lens will work for me. Also, almost everyone thinks this lens will only benefit the FX shooter for the "Wide" shot. Nevertheless, this lens has the focal length I need for Night landscape panorama shooting on my DX. And, the benefits of this specific FX lens on a DX crop body overcome it's weakness on the FX cameras: 1) Because, it uses the sweet spot of the lens: less light fall off or vignette at f/1.8. And, sharper corner to corner photos using f/1.8. 2) And, because it has less distortion it requires less overlap on panoramas. And, giving the Medium format Look while still getting a ultra wide view. Some other unique features that make this lens worth considering for FX and DX are: 1) it focuses closer than any f/1.8 DX lens (prime or zoom) for amazing blur background and large bokeh balls. 2) it has amazing 14 point star/moon/sun burst. 3) it controls sun or light flare very well due to the lens coatings. 4) and, it's small, light, and compact. The only downside to the Nikon 20mm f/1.8G ED, is the same as with all fast primes no matter the price. Yes, Chromatic Aberration (CA) in higher in primes than in zoom lenses. And they appear under high contrast conditions shooting with large apertures like f/1.8 and larger. And, It varies very little from prime to prime. The larger the aperture the more CA is to be expected. But the good news is, like all primes, the CA can be corrected by camera and in editing software.
