Let's Take a Break and Talk About Toponium

CMS, one of the two big, multi-purpose experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, has seen an excess consistent with the production of toponium. What is toponium, and what did they see? We discuss. Toponium is a quasi-bound state of a top quark and its antiquark. CMS found an excess that looks like toponium while searching for new particles with properties like those of the Higgs boson. Confirmation/refutation of this result from ATLAS is highly anticipated.
