Learn about the Bespoke Unit Cigar Formula: https://bespokeunit.com/cigars/formula/ Video Summary: 00:00 Introduction At Bespoke Unit, we're big fans of the Reserva Original. Fortunately, the cigar was reviewed using the Bespoke Unit Cigar Formula, a quantifiable review matrix. Furthermore, the cigars were stored in a Boveda acrylic humidor with 69% Boveda packs and a Boveda Butler to prepare the cigars beforehand. 01:08 Cigar Overview A Nicaraguan puro, the Reserva Original consists of Jalapa and Estelí tobacco from fields certified by the Organic Crop Improvement Association. Plasencia employed a traditional and native Nicarao method for growing the tobacco. 01:57 Look & Feel A remarkably straight cigar with a smooth body and solid construction. There are no soft spots and it has a firm spring. The colour has a distinctive nutmeg hue that has a mottled texture. The aromas on the foot consist of labdanum, caramel, and cinnamon. 02:33 Prelight Some have observed a hard draw on the Reserva Original. However, we have yet had to experience this issue ourselves. Indeed, the draws were ideal. The dry draw delivered notes of salted caramel, cinnamon, and gingerbread. 03:13 Tasting Notes The first third opens with musky labdanum, fragrant rosewood, and malt creaminess on the retrohale. Meanwhile, the second third consists of charred patchouli, grape must, and nutmeg. Finally, the last third transitioned to an accord dominated by terracotta. It was accompanied by sandalwood and pepper. An overall complex cigar with a smooth velvet mouthfeel, it's perfectly balanced and stimulates every part of the palate. Its residual scent is pleasingly aromatic and completely inoffensive. 05:36 Burn The draw remains consistent and doesn't tighten or loosen. Meanwhile, the burn line can be a little wavy but it doesn't necessarily need any touch-ups. The Plasencia Reserva Original also produces an excellent ash backbone. However, it can get somewhat hot if smoked too quickly so slow savouring is rewarded. 06:26 Overall Experience The Reserva Original has three bands - the main band, a secondary band, and one on the foot. They look stunning but the main band is a little large, which means it needs to be removed relatively early into the smoking experience if you're having a robusto. Fortunately, the secondary band is further up and can stay on even at the nub. The box has a rustic design with leather strips and what appear to be wooden planks. It's quite unique when compared to other boxes and you can see pictures in the written review linked above. The cigar offers phenomenal value for money. A single cigar will set you back less than $8, which is excellent for an organic cigar. Occasionally, you can pick them up on sale for about $5 each. It's also very versatile and can be chosen for special occasions but is affordable enough to enjoy at home with friends. 08:39 Pairings Grilled hanger steak would be a great choice given that it's a tender and flavoursome cut. Otherwise, you could opt for dark chocolate. Alternatively, Danish pastry would marry well with the cigar's spicy flavours. As for beverages, Armagnac would be a better choice given that it has more personality than cognac. But cognac is fine, too. Vintage champagne would pair well with the cigar's veinous second third or you could instead opt for filter coffee as a non-alcoholic choice.
