10 Things They Never Told You About Being an Artist

Here are 10 things they never told you about being an aspiring artist. 1. Sometimes you will spend hours on something and be really proud of it, and a lot of the time, you won’t get much recognition for it. You have to be okay with that because you need to firstly make art for yourself. Build your work up for you, not for the recognition of others. 2. Not everyone is going to like you or your work, and that’s okay. 3. Have confidence in your work. If you don’t have it, fake It until you do. 4. Dont use lack of money or location as an excuse that you can’t make art. You do NOT need expensive tools in order to make art. 5. You SHOULD accept constructive criticism, but you SHOULDN’T accept blatant insults or rudeness. 6. Do not try to be like everyone else. A lot of artists want to find their style and I actually made a video about this a few weeks back. We all learn by doing. 7. Be kind. Trust me when I say if you aren’t nice to someone, if in the future you get more well known or the person you weren’t kind to gets more well known, word of mouth travels fast, and you do not want to be known as that rude, know it all, jealous artist. Because you will not go very far. 8. Do not wait until the moment is “right” because there is no “right” moment, start now, don’t wait, even if you’re only able to draw stick men. Keep a Sketchbook. 9. Art is not easy, it does take a lot of work, it takes patience, it takes time. So practice. Yes, you’re probably sick of that word, but I guarantee you that you will find no better lesson anywhere than the lesson you learn by trial and error. 10. You will ALWAYS be learning something new.
