Jones Seminar on Science, Technology, and Society. "Label-Free Chemical Imaging for Biology and Medicine." Chi Zhang, Postdoctoral Associate, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. 11/8/2019 Chemical imaging offers critical information to understand fundamentals in biological sciences and to aid clinical diagnostics. Label-free chemical imaging has attracted a broad interest since it avoids the use of exogenous molecular labels which would perturb biological functionality. In addition, by directly probing inherent biomolecules, label-free chemical imaging does not rely on the delivery of chemical labels and circumvents the problem of non-specific binding. Therefore, it has unique advantages to interrogate living samples and to characterize human tissue in vivo. Coherent Raman scattering, which utilizes lasers to manipulate the vibrations of molecules, is one of the emerging label-free chemical imaging technologies which has shown great potentials to shed new light on biological and medical research. In this presentation, I will first introduce coherent Raman scattering microscopy as a powerful tool for biologists and medical scientists. Then, I will cover some of our recent progress in technological development and biomedical applications of label-free chemical imaging. Finally, I will discuss potential directions of the field towards better platforms for single-cell analysis, drug discovery, and diagnosis. The continuous advancement of label-free chemical imaging will bring new opportunities for biology and medicine.
