It is approximately 225 meters long, 100 meters wide, and 15 meters high, and it served as an ancient quarry. From here, the famous stone known by its Arabic name “Mizi Malaka,” an excellent building stone that was used to construct the grand structures of Jerusalem, was extracted. As far as known, the quarrying at this site began in the days of the First Temple period. The legend tells that during the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem, Zedekiah, the last king of Judea, fled through this cave to Jericho, and since then it has been named after him, and the spring that flows inside its depths was called “Zedekiah’s Tears.” Josephus Flavius (Yosef ben Mattityahu) may have called it the “Cavern of the Kings,” and from it, stones were quarried for the construction of Jerusalem and possibly even the Second Temple. The cave disappeared from sight with the construction of the city walls during the Ottoman period, and it was rediscovered by chance in the mid-19th century. In the early 20th century AD, stones were quarried from the cave for the construction of the Clock Tower that once stood above the Jaffa Gate, and was later dismantled during the British Mandate period. The last stones from the cave were taken for the walls of the Jerusalem International YMCA communion room. Members of the secret Masonic order adopted the ancient quarry as a meeting and gathering place, and there established one of the first Freemason lodges in the Holy Land. While touring the cave the visitor is surrounded in a mesmerizing silence, where one can almost still hear the echoes of the chisels of the quarrymen and the bubbling of Zedekiah’s Tears Spring.
