I had the privilege to cover the historic Eaton Fire for seven days primarily on NBC Los Angeles, but also for NBC San Diego platforms. We arrived within 48 hours of the fire starting and stayed until the investigation into what sparked it began. It was devastating to see so many people lose everything. It was also inspiring to see how they came together. Most importantly, our role as journalists had never felt more vital than in those moments-- when all eyes were on the 24/7 coverage that provided critical information. While we were in between live shots, we used our downtime to check on 35+ addresses for residents who were sending direct messages on social media. Before they were legally able to return to the burn area, they would watch our live coverage, recognize the street or block, then ask for an answer to a simple question, but one that would change their whole world: "is my home at ______ still there?"
