Video documentation of the artistic research and creative activities presented at the 2014 International Zizek Studies Conference, held April 4-6 at the University of Cincinnati's School of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning (DAAP). ABOUT The International Zizek Studies Conference, the International Journal of Žižek Studies and University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) invited submissions and participation on the conference theme "Parallax Future(s) in Art and Design, Ideology, and Philosophy." The theme calls us to examine aesthetic regimes and ideology (e.g., Ranciere, Mitchell), anti-philosophy in the postmodern world (e.g., Groys and Badiou), and ideology (e.g., Althusser, Eagleton, Zizek). How might one interpret a parallax gap/view in their respective fields using the work of Slavoj Zizek and connected discourses (e.g., Lacan, Dean, Freud, Copjec, Sloterdijk, Nancy, Dewey, Habermas, Ponty, etc.)? http://www.zizekstudiesconference.com/ A total of 19 creative works and presentations emerging from the intersections of artistic practice and academic inquiry were included in the conference. Creative proposals were subject to a peer- reviewed process conducted by a transdisciplinary team of scholars specializing in artistic inquiry and practices of creative scholarship. Members of the review panel represented the disciplines of philosophy, art, media, communication and cultural studies. The presentations aimed to facilitate cross-disciplinary exchange between artistic practitioners, academic thinkers, researchers and philosophers. Artistic research and creative activities were presented using a range of formats, including: Exhibition, Performance, Workshops, Interventions, Collective “Making” Sessions, Papers on Artistic Inquiry, Creative Presentation of Research Findings, Site-Specific Installations, Multi-media and Interactive Projects. ARTISTIC/CREATIVE PRESENTATION DOCUMENTED IN THIS VIDEO Performance, interactive exhibition, and discussion. "PEACE OF ASS: Israeli-Palestinian Peace Fashion and Dance Performance" Produced and directed by Ariel Katz and Jon Simons; performed by Movement Cooperative (Leah Fournier, Amelia Heintzelman, Nick Heinzen, and Eryn Blair) ABSTRACT This performance explores the potential of humorous and irreverent, contact-based physical activity to displace the psychic investments of national subjects and to activate alternative enjoyment that connects the national identities of Israelis and Palestinians with each other. The performance consists of a mock fashion show and contact improvisation dance, incorporating the themes of “Shouldering peace, heading for peace,’ “Getting comfortable with peace,” “peace superhero,” “walking the peace talk,” “flags on bodies, bodies on flags,” and “peace of ass”. MORE The exhibition, “Try on peace for size” displays the garments worn and played with during the performance, and invites you to try on the costumes, see if peace suits you, photograph yourself, and post to a special site.
