Newly-wed 18-year-old Anwara Begum, a resident of Hooghly district, was brought to Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jessore Road, Kolkata, as she suffered from heart ailments for a long time. Up on examination, Dr. Arunansu Dhole, Cardiac surgeon and Consultant at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Jessore Road, Kolkata, found trouble in her aortic and mitral valves. At an early age, rheumatic valve diseases can cause these conditions. A double valve replacement surgery or DVR was performed. However, since she was of child-bearing age, she was given bio-prosthetic valves instead of mechanical ones. Blood thinning medicine used during DVR can complicate pregnancies and harm the foetus. She was advised to conceive two years after the surgery. Currently, she is 21 years old and has a healthy one-year-old baby boy. The mother and baby are both safe and healthy.
