In 1946, there was the ZIS-154 Soviet transit bus - a new generation of buses based on the American GM Old Look bus. A few years later, the ZIS-155 appeared. Simpler and shorter, it still resembled a General Motors bus quite common in the USA. But, in 1956, a newer bus took to the streets that was to change Soviet buses for decades. It was the ZIL-158. Built to be longer and more powerful than the ZIS-155, it started out looking like a GM bus, but then quickly was restyled, and became the face of public transport in Moscow, Leningrad, and other Russian cities for the next couple of decades. The ZIL-158, even though an improvement over its two predecessors, was by no means perfect. A number of variations were built to address its shortcomings, but they were never put into mass production. Over 62,000 ZIL-158 buses were built in the USSR. The end of the line came in 1969, when it would be replaced by the LiAZ-677. See and hear the story of the ZIL-158!
