THE AGIDA SPEAKS The Agida is the largest drum among the Maroons of Suriname and French Guyana. It is made, with many rituals, of hollowed tree-trunks and covered with an animal sheet. The Agida is used to communicate with the gods of the earth pantheon. These are called ‘Papawenti’, ‘Dagbé osi Dagbé’ and ‘(Ainsa) Wodu’. The gods of the earth pantheon are under the leadership of the earth goddess, Asasi Yaa Nana (Mother Earth). It is not surprising that most of the priests of the gods of the earth pantheon, are women. Even in the distant past, the ministry of the earth gods was headed by women. One of these important women, is ma Asafé Botiäla of the Pedi-lo. She was head of the head carry oracle of the deity Agendeüsu among the Okanisi Maroons. The name Asasi is derived from the Twi word "Asasɛ", meaning 'Earth god'. The head goddess, Asasi Yaa Nana, is also given numerous other names. Such as Ainsa Wodu, or Mama Ainsa (the Creoles speak of Mama Aisa). The Agida, as well as the Papawenti, is an African heritage. In the Papa tongo (the language spoken in ceremonies and rituals around the earth gods), many words can be traced in among others, Benin (formerly Dohomey) and among the Yoruba communities. For example, among the Maroons we speak of "Lokosi Loko, Lokosi andawé". That is the big tree, the KANKANTIÏ (Ceiba pentandra, also known as a kapok tree). In Dahomey, but also among the Yoruba, they speak of "Loko" (Iroko), referring to a tree sacred to them.
