Better batteries for implantable medical devices

The batteries used in implantable medical devices are ultra safe, but they have relatively low energy density for their size. Using the CLS, researchers from McGill University discovered that adding a very small amount of a special material (neodymium) to the anode can increase the amount of energy a battery can store by a whopping 20%. The team thinks that neodymium disrupts the anode structure to create channels so lithium can move more freely, which increases the battery’s energy density. Together with their industry partner, medical device maker Metronic, the researchers have filed a series of patents for the new technology.
