Robert Stark (1847-1922) Clarinet Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 50 I. Adagio – Allegro con brio 0:00 II. Adagio 6:13 III. Finale: Allegro vivace 13:20 Dimitri Ashkenazy, clarinet Hamburger Symphoniker David Curtis, conductor Robert Stark (1847-1922) was a German clarinetist, composer, and teacher. Born in Kligenthal, Saxony to a musical instrument maker, he was introduced to the clarinet and other wind instruments at an early age, and became such an expert performer that he was taken into the Saxon military at the age of 13 to be a “signalist”, and was admitted to the Dresden Conservatory a few years later. He became a member of the Chemnitz Orchestra at 24, and after 2 years there, became the solo clarinetist at Wiesbaden (where beyond the shadow of a doubt he was a close associate of Joachim Raff). After 8 years there, he moved to Würzburg, where he curtailed his career as a performer to spend more time composing and teaching at the Wüzburger Musikschule, where he remained until he retired in 1919. He died 3 years later, 40 days after his 75th birthday. Among his compositions are 3 clarinet concertos, chamber works, and numerous technical studies for clarinet.
