So excited to see this beautiful young grey seal, who’s been hauling out on local beaches for the past couple of weeks, and an amazing privilege to be able to observe her at such close quarters (from the street above the beach). The vast majority of people put her welfare first by staying off the beach while she’s there (which is pretty easy here, as we have several beaches within easy walking distance). It was really disappointing, though, to see a few people putting their desire to sit on the beach with their chairs/coffees/dogs, above this beautiful wild animal’s need for peace and space. Despite being asked not to. 🤯 This is what the Seal Research Trust says about this seal: ⚠️ A solitary, wild grey seal in Plymouth and south east Cornwall needs our help - because she has been hauling out on public beaches! ⚠️ 🦭 Please give her the space she needs during her annual moult as she regrows an entirely new fur coat over 3 to 4 weeks. This takes a lot of energy and, with blood nearer the skin surface to grow her new coat, she is extremely vulnerable to disturbance. She needs to be able to regularly rest on land at this time. Any time spent interacting with people is a waste of her precious energy. As a sub adult she may even become a mum soon, so she needs all the energy she can get to grow her pup enough for it to survive its first winter! She is a powerful seal with sharp teeth and claws. All water users encountering her are advised to leave the water for everyone’s safety. ⚠️ Natural England’s advice is clear: Follow the Defra Marine and Coastal Wildlife Code: https://www.gov.uk/.../marine-and-coa... Please stay 100m away and off beaches where she is present Keep your dog on a lead ⚠️ Following Defra’s best practice will mean Wild grey can relax, sleep, rest and regrow her new fur, and save all her energy for any future pup. It will also keep her safe and help her avoid injury from human interaction if she panics and rushes over rocks to the sea.
