Many anglers believe the only way to target sea trout is by going out in the darkness of night and casting wet flys. However, few know that sea trout can actually be caught in day light hours using the dry fly! It shouldn't be so surprising since genetically sea trout and brown trout are pretty much the same. A sea trout is simply a brown trout that has travelled to salt water to feed and returns to freshwater to spawn. On their return to freshwater they feed alongside their brown trout cousins on whatever is hatching on the river at the time (upwinged olives, sedges, mayfly). I discovered myself, whilst targeting brown trout on the dry fly that sea trout would also take a dry fly just as easily, given the opportunity. The sea trout are thinly spread out along my local river and travel in small pods so it takes a bit of luck in finding them. Putting a dry fly over a sea trout and watching that fly get plucked from the surface by a sea trout and tightening into that fish is top sport for the game angler.
