This live recording is very much like a time capsule that hasn’t been opened since it was sealed in 1947. It is a powerful documentation of the very early stages of a new form of music that within a decade would be commonly referred to as Bluegrass. With the help of my good friends Jerry Stuart, Tracey Steffey and Sharlene Franklin we started going through his house. Long story short ...I decided to start collection in Clyde’s memory by donating his precious material to the Folk Life Center at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC. Thanks to Steve Weiss for taking care and digitizing the original acetate discs that were Clyde Franklin was a Western NC bluegrass institution, business owner, philosopher, limerick writer, wordsmith, banjoist, teacher, with encyclopedic knowledge about string gauges, pearl inlays, tone rings, birds of prey, plant photography, etymology, poetry, Huddle House menus, weightlifting, C.S Lewis etc and one of the kindest, hospitable and smartest people I have ever met in my life. A New Englander transplanted to Asheville and its fertile OT and bluegrass soil, Clyde’s photographic memory brings to life events from his past travels in pursuit of the bluegrass from coast to coast including scenes of encounters with teenagers Clarence & Roland White in Burbank, following Flatt & Scruggs around and taping their shows, owning and operating The Bluegrass Center on Hendersonville Rd in Asheville. I first met Clyde Franklin, who was born in 1938, at his music store - The Bluegrass Center – in Asheville in 1986. I had just arrived here from Sweden in my own search of the well of the bluegrass. It turned in to an extended visit and for the next two years a bedroom in the basement of the Bluegrass Center was my home base on this side of the Atlantic. Produced with CyberLink PowerDirector 13
