I Misteriously, tempo of a funeral march II Very fast III Very slowly, extremely quiet, whispering IV Allegretto (with grace, no rush) V Andante cantabile A winter weekend spent in solitude inspired Hans Werner Henze to write Five Scenes from the Snow Country. "Twice during short pauses in the storm, I went into the woods and noticed the effect of drifts and the collection of snow crystals that sparkled in the sun" (Henze). Perhaps in an attempt to achieve a similarly varied collection of colors from the marimba, he not only specifies a selection of different mallets, but also asks the performer to utilize fingertips, nails, and knuckles. For this recording, I used Henze’s original manuscript score (provided by the Sammlung Hans Werner Henze), which turned out to have several interesting deviations from the published score. (I plan to make a list of those deviations at a later time). The piece was commissioned by Michiko Takahashi and premiered by Peter Sadlo on October 12, 1982, at SDR, Stuttgart. *** Performer, liner notes, producer: Mathias Reumert Sound engineer: Daniel Storm Cinematographer: Adam Wallensten Editing and grading: Kenneth Laugaard Andersen Camera: Adam Wallensten, Christian Holten Bonke, Sturla Brandth Grøvlen Music publishing: Schott Music *** Originally published on DVD': https://divineartrecords.com/recordin... ℗©2014 Metier Records division Divine Art Ltd
