The Dynamic Metaphor Duo of the New Covenant

This teaching examines a foundational principle of the New Covenant that is powerfully conveyed through two expressive metaphors. These metaphors appear twice in the Apostle Paul’s epistles to the church, first in II Corinthians 1:21-22, and second in Ephesians 1:13-14. To show the theological purpose behind Paul’s combination of these two metaphors, the meanings of the words “sealed” and “earnest” are examined. The teaching reveals how a misunderstanding of what an “earnest” is in a Greco-Roman contract has caused grave theological error. Twice in his epistles to the church, the Apostle Paul used these two powerful metaphors in tandem to forcefully declare a foundational principle of the New Covenant: the permanence of salvation.
