Let's start with the comment from the D&D lead rules designer Jeremy Crawford. "The half construction is inherently racist" This statement is quite clear in its intent. They are removing from the game a race that had unique traits that were the combination of two other races and saying that it's racist to inherit traits from two different parents. In the new rules it says that a character can have a human and elf parent, but you must pick the traits that are specific to one of those pure bloodlines and that is your character.
