Mockup photos are just photos of blank shirts (or mugs, pillows, etc.) that designers use to just place their design on it digitally in an image editing program. So it makes it look like they really made the shirt and photographed it, but really all they have to do is place the digital design and can reuse the same mockup many times without actually having to make the shirt. It's a win/win, because they get great product images and save time and money by not having to physically make samples!
