A frail young woman from the city is sent to recuperate on the tidal coast of Maine. Her lodging is the isolated farmhouse of Miss Catherine Ferry, known locally as “Lady  Ferry.” Neighbours whisper that the old woman has lived for more than a century—ever since Revolutionary days—and that she moves as comfortably between the realms of the living and the dead as she does across her mist‑shrouded fields. While the narrator regains her health, she observes Lady  Ferry’s uncanny strength, hears cryptic references to bygone wars, and once glimpses the old woman crossing the moonlit river as if answering a summons. The doctor and villagers offer no definitive explanation. When Lady  Ferry finally disappears (whether by death or some ghostly passage), she leaves behind only a serene, empty house and the narrator’s enduring sense that time and mortality are not quite fixed.
