Characteristics of Paintings from Song and Yuan Eras In this video, art historian Dr. Stanley-Baker introduces her appraisal method of Chinese ancient paintings that had been refined over the course of decades of studies. This integrated methodology incorporates an Oriental viewing-based connoisseurship with a Western formalist structured analysis, through which she is able to elucidate many hypotheses in traditional Chinese painting theories that were apprehended intuitively and never meant to be articulated. Subjecting the corpus of Wu Zhen’s (1280-1354) and Zhao Mengfu’s (1254-1322) attributed works to a vigorous analysis in terms of composition, brushwork, atmosphere, style and form; all with comparison to Song (960-1279) and Ming (1368-1644) paintings, she defined features of “vast scale in depth and height”, “serene and contemplative expression”, “weighted and introspective strokes”, and “expansive spaces”, etc., unique hallmarks of Yuan style for literati paintings. Appraising these paintings with her heart’s eye led Dr. Stanley-Baker to the discovery of characteristics pertaining to Song and Yuan paintings. It is this expertise that makes her a master of dating and connoisseurship in Chinese painting.This video was developed around the core ideas of the following two books by Dr. Stanley-Baker: “Old Master Repainted – Wu Zhen (1280-1354) Prime Objects and Accretions” and “Hua Yu Lu”, (Dialogues with C. C. Wang on the subject of the brushwork in Chinese painting). The former presents an audacious and subversive perspective that was considered highly unconventional at the time of its first English publication in 1995. “Hua Yu Lu”, its first editions published in traditional and simplified Chinese in 2013-2014, addresses critical aspects of Chinese painting connoisseurship in the form of dialogues with artist and collector C. C. Wang. With materials from the two books interwoven with a variety of high-resolution images, bilingual subtitles in Chinese and English, presented by Dr. Stanley-Baker herself in vivid demonstration, this video presents itself as an invaluable resource for all scholars of art in the field of painting.  About the Speaker Dr. Joan Stanley Baker was born in 1934 into a Chinese-German family in Nanjing and grew up in a multi-cultural environment. She studied at Bennington College before she specialized in Chinese art history at Princeton, and completed the Ph. D degree at Cambridge.During a 4-year stay in Japan, she involved herself in writing art critics based on the viewing and studies of a large amount of traditional paintings and calligraphies in public exhibitions. After returning to the U.S., she explored issues of brushwork in Chinese paintings under the guidance of the artist and art collector C. C. Wang.
